Ella Frances Sanders created a series titled 11 Untranslatable Words from Other Cultures in which she defined and illustrated these words. It's delightful! They're done almost like flashcards; they're easy drawings with the definition written beside them. There are some really great words here!
Words like these have been whittled down over time and have become so packed with meaning. They are so perfect in their meaning and level of detail that they simply can't be translated. However they are also so perfect in their meaning and level of detail that it's such a shame they don't exist universally.
During the next week I'm going to study why these gaps exist, and why, despite their apparent cultural relevance, certain words don't exist in certain cultures. I'm also going to continue to broaden my research to how language shapes meaning and how meaning shapes language.
